Tracked back to https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/6310469 and seems specific to Mate per conversation with @Kilian - this can be worked around by passing `--gtk-version=3` on startup as well.

We haven't gotten a response to our questions in our comment above. With only the information that is currently in the issue, we don't have enough information to take action....
@cucbin please rebase this PR! Once that's done we can merge this. I'd wait until it's merged and then update the backport pull request to 32.
