I got the same error when removing quiet mask from a user. The patch([#473](https://github.com/martynsmith/node-irc/pull/473)) fixed the issue.
@medikoo no one updating the node-irc, you will need to update it urself or download from someone. You will need to change one line in irc.js https://github.com/sh1omi/node-irc/commit/fd0520a284ed5a13a33d7431d6baae063010fe2d

There is docs for node-irc: https://node-irc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/API.html there is a "message" event to get the messages. You can also check my bot https://github.com/sh1omi/IrcBot (the bot not using node-irc).
You dont need sasl to connect to gitter, you only need the server password. node-irc is not updated for long time and I dont think that you can set a...
so remove the line "sasl: true," should solve ur problem.
