Getting the same problem as well; the icon for VLC Media Player never showed up on the EarTrumpet GUI. 
Your configuration file is a .txt file. It needs to be a .json file (just change the file extension, and it should work).
Can you give some more details on what exactly the issue is? (Screenshots would be helpful as well)
One thing I always do when something isn't loading in correctly is put all my images into the custommainmenu folder. In @DragonmasterDJ 's screenshot, you can see the CMM button...
