I've since realised this problem only occurs if the controller is manually turned off by holding the steam button. If the controller is left to turn itself off, everything works...
[MyAvatar.setBoomLength](https://github.com/overte-org/overte/blob/0dcd6f86e6900d7a3b88ecdf34aab8ac979698ff/interface/src/avatar/MyAvatar.h#L1346) seems to be what we want to set.
Sorry, that's just on the C++ side. It's what I think would need to be exposed to scripts to set the camera distance
