This is actually a bug that hopefully will be fixed in the next release. The markdown is used internally and shouldn't be leaking out.
Sure. There is (was?) a debate about supporting markdown in posts in mastodon as a whole but until that happens I don't think 1 client can implement it unilaterally
Did this get improved again in 1.2.2? Seems flawless now on my 13 Pro.
I'm sympathetic to this. I set my RSS reader to oldest first. Have a hard time figuring out how the ui might work though. How would pull to refresh work?...

This looks more promising. Will needs a bit more testing.
Looking at the thread, there's mention of zero width joining characters. I'll try and take a look this evening. I'd actually like to take another crack at the markdown generation.
FWIW the zero width joiners were breaking HTML2Markdown
