Basemap can be installed on linux using apt-get, since it cannot be installed by pip. On MacOS one solution is proposed here: https://github.com/matplotlib/basemap/issues/251 I.e. pip install https://github.com/matplotlib/basemap/archive/v1.0.7rel.tar.gz
