Fixed by setting GROFF_NO_SGR. Note that Debian disable the use of SGR escape sequences by default. cf. man grotty.

I assume adding GROFF_NO_SGR=1 has no problem with - groff >=1.18 with Debian default - groff >=1.18 default - groff
