Thanks @jswhit you [solved my issue over here](https://github.com/Unidata/netcdf4-python/issues/406#issuecomment-478985911) It was version `4.4.1.1` of the lib.
That's a good point. I guess it's not been so relevant to us because we deliberately want to mount as read-only. So a lot of that complexity goes away.
