I'm experiencing this as well and get curl: `(28) FTP response timeout`. Works very well with .js files and timeouts on .css files?
When I experienced it, it didn't seem server related. It just suddenly didn't work.
Have you tried with an older version of git-ftp? If that doesn't work, I'm pretty sure it's os x that breaks the script somehow.

I don't think it is the speed of writing that causes it, but the conflicted copy is created in the middle of writing a word. Sometimes 1 or 2 copies...
