I hadn't seen it. I can't tell if there's an actual solution in that discussion or not, aside from michaelrsweet's statement about how it maybe needs to be solved outside...
So it would seem that this is still broken? I was completely unable to get ...subscribe(member) to work until I fed it an array. That solved the problem.
