OK, I managed to fix this, but only by uninstalling "ghc-mod". As soon as I install "ghc-mod", the problem returns. Not having "ghc-mod" installed does not seem to lead to...

FWIW, my problems disappeared after upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10. I am now able to use ghc-mod without getting any errors.
