@cadedaniel I believe that the status subresource should work. If you're getting a 404 return code I would double-check if your CRD has enabled the Status subresource.

I think that you would want to update the doc for the new field as well but otherwise this looks good to me but I'm not a maintainer :(
As there has been little movement on this issue, I am going to close it. If someone would like to drive it we can either re-open or create a duplicate.
If this is true, can we change the default to permanently exclude the velero namespace, or even better, maybe, always exclude velero resources by default?
