@danielseaton Thank you for reporting this! I also have a similar problem (issue [153](https://github.com/snakemake/snakemake/issues/153)) and I can confirm that I can "solve" my problem by putting an `ls` / `sleep`...

@wyim-pgl GPFS as in IBM's General Parallel File System? No, I'm running it on Ubuntu 18.04 and just NFS. I'm not able to upgrade Ubuntu to the latest LTS (20.04)....
