I realise this is an old issue, but I seem to be having the same problem (only for md, not for mail). @niklaas did you solve it?
Turns out the salt length is specified in bytes not bits, so I had a salt length 8 times too large!
I'm happy to have a crack at this if you've not started yet @jarretbillingsley. Similarly if you've got WIP code, I'm more than happy to help!
