Haven't looked at vis source but simple question: the original sam regexp engine is open sourced. Why not reuse it? A lot of care went into getting it right.

Builtins will execute in a subshell if redirection is used, so that explains the behavior.

Well, I'm not in charge of maintaining rc these days! But I'd say leave it open. It does seem like a hair-splitting issue, as you say, one with little gain....

Just saw this thread.. wonder why bother with a protect() at all? This is the simplest solution, and it's in line with rc punting on all UTF-8 issues (for now).
This is an unintended side-effect of the strategy described in #62 . Best to keep this in mind while designing a fix.
I'll close this. Let's leave ifs alone.
