Just to note that this problem still persists - there are about 27 errors reported for the Samples component in the most recent Antora build.
Having just dealt with some nested ifdef conditionals, I'd find both an 'else' directive and the ability to say defined(attribute-name) or equivalent in ifeval::, very useful.
