Just to be clear this seems to be limited to Mastodon, on other sites like Twitter and Facebook the preview image is crystal clear, really kind of a bummer it...

You need to use Singularity viewer or Firestorm viewer or one of the other various Third Party Viewers that are available that have grid manager integrated into them. http://www.singularityviewer.org
My thought is maybe the object is parented?
