@runrevmark I managed to wrangle git (at no small risk to life and limb) into fixing up the intermediate commits. I think this is ready now.

It'll take me a while to absorb this too, but I like what I see so far. This is destined for the develop branch... will it be backported to other...

Would like to give this PR a bump. It's currently blocking my native arm compilation and would also increase testability for newer versions of thirdparty prebuilt libraries.
OK - I gotta admit that's impresive. I do echo Mike's concern, though, that things like Windows UNC formats like "C:\user\docs\textLetter.txt" not get get mangled in transit.
Ah... I missed that. Escaping is within *single* quotes, not double quotes. I expect there may be some user confusion ahead since the two aren't completely interchangeable, but it does...
Can we revive this PR and discussion now (three years later)?
Makes sense to me. I think the 'sha256 / sha512' forms are more intuitive, but obviously lead into some problem areas for the future, so the 'sha2' form in both...
