Tangential, but are there use cases where this is deliberate? I'm wondering whether it would be helpful to have the book build report any orphan (non-SUMMARY) pages it finds.
As a user I think this would be surprising. If I were clicking around in the ToC pane and reading in the main pane, then clicked an innocuous-looking ToC entry...

Just a fellow newbie here, but maybe I can help a bit. Zola categorizes content as either "pages" and "sections", which correspond *roughly* to files and directories, but only roughly....
Are you expecting this to happen often, or is it more of an extreme edge case? If the latter, running your truncated string though Tera's [escape](https://keats.github.io/tera/docs/#escape) filter is probably enough....
