IMO "unprintable" chars would be better to show by some "friendly" names like or something similar. Use of any symbols will confuse.

This seem as some hardly reproducible issue. I was able to make it a couple of times and then it stopped to happen.
It seems already fixed in the current build

After looking at the code of format_date I see that TimeSpan isn't expected at all and its partial working is just a lucky coincidence...
