:tabsend would be a good name, but somebody needs to implement it :) And I am not sure if the feature is really used that often to warrant a single-keystroke...
Space (and a few other keys like Enter) unfortunately has some places where it is hard coded, so I agree with you about the bug, but there is nothing simple...
