did you ever figure out what the issue here was?
Node 9.11.2 works for me- 10.x hasn't worked at all for it. Latest NPM, etc, npm rebuild i2c, nothing worked.
I swapped to i2c-bus it wasn't too big an issue.
doubt it, it'd be better to select one and do into the future with it, I think
