I'm finding the same. Trying to keep the line count preserved has very unpredictable behaviour, but always ends up in all blank lines being removed after a few saves.
I ran into this as well. Might be good to add to the Typescript section in the documentation
I had this same problem. I ended up resolving it by explicitly marking the joined-in column as optional `col as "col?"`.
