I have working sleep/wake/shutdown, but sleep and shutdown can take 20 seconds or more... I did have a few moments when it did a near instant shutdown, but not many...

That is probably trying to update Apple EFI files (which do not exist). The actual install is probably fine, because it is a two-step install, boot back into the USB...
