Side note, dumping this issue and the relevant file into GPT4o gave a near-perfect fix (I actually assumed refs would be needed, but that might be old [pre-hooks thinking](https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/react-state-vs-ref-differences-and-use-cases/#:~:text=Refs%20are%20not%20directly%20linked,without%20affecting%20the%20user%20interface.)).
