Note: there are lots of test failures for `PlaintextConsumerTest`’s `testPerPartitionLagMetricsCleanUpWithSubscribe` and `testPerPartitionLeadMetricsCleanUpWithSubscribe`. This PR _shouldn't_ affect those tests, but I'll investigate more. cc @lianetm @philipnee
