Does this happen with Checkstyle on the command line as well? That exception does look like it's coming out of the parser in Checkstyle rather than from the plugin.

Stupid thought - did this happen while you were editing a file, e.g. might the file have been syntacticly incorrect at the time? Checkstyle only commit to supporting syntactically correct...
