I have more or less the same problems with k9 version 5.207 (also with the previous versions during at least one year) but only when I'm using my 2g/3g/4g connection....
A simple button to stop the sync could 'solve' this issue? When the times seems to be too long, the user could stop the sync and launch it again more...
