Have you looked into Spring Security and the minimum configuration for JWT? Does the Bearer Token contain a JWT in your situation? Regardless, Spring Security should have something that works...

should it be possible to verify this is sending something by looking at the networks tab of the browser?

I do see "ping" events in the Google Chrome network tab
