Hmm I somehow feel the benefit of the original control sidebar is that you can preview the changes on any page. The theme generator works well on its own but...
My solution is to apply Select2 to import-export code and monitor the event from there (action_formats.js). Here I have created a pull request to ensure select2 won't be applied twice....
