I just tested the Windows 3.6.1 no-CUDA pre-build version and it works without crashing.
I just bumped into the same issue. It would be great to resolve it. Sounds like an easy but breaking change, unfortunately.
I just tested the latest nightly on Ubuntu. While 4.1.1 was still causing 100% CPU usage when idle, the latest nightly is down at 10-15% which is great.
Regarding the freezing issue, it will most likely be the GPU memory running out. This is just my guess, but you can verify it easily: switch to pure CPU feature...
