Change prefix handling to add metric prefixes

This adds support for [Metric Prefixes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_prefix) as requested in #126

Hi, I removed the writes to std::cerr that precede raising exceptions (it pollutes the output). Let me know what you think.
