Maybe we can try normalizing the URL when inserted into DB, so the cost is not paid when querying. The code works on my machine.

I think the problem lies on the server side. The version of HBase I used is 0.96.1, and it can't parse "" as a JSON object.

What blank do you mean? An empty cell, or tag is missing?

What kind of encoding support do you need, for input or for output? In my understanding for input is more realistic and useful.
