What version of matplotlib are you using?
In your call to contourf, try adding the kwarg `corner_mask='legacy'`. This will change to a different contouring algorithm.

Right, cartopy badly needs attention, including additional examples. Examples or tutorials along the lines of "how to translate this basemap plot into cartopy" would be enormously helpful. As would clear...
