Black borders should be cropped - otherwise they show up on the final model 
The left hand strip is not turned into a depth map - it is the same width as the block size, hence can't be compared. Remove it? 
Currently it's a pointcloud. Possible to make it a continuous mesh?
Perhaps better edge detection first?
