In case it helps someone else... I was running into this problem and found that when I used a hosted image with a file extension (.jpg), it worked.
I ran into problems dealing with the opacity of background images, both with the inherent challenges with modern browser standards as well as getting the rendering by phantomjs. What worked...
@marcbachmann i suggest you mark this issue resolved as the solution provided by @ThibaudREY works perfectly. And update your documentation accordingly. Now I love this package! 👍
