I have finally solved this. The issue was, I think, connected to the fact that my user had an LDAP identity. It was created when I linked my local GitLab...
I'm having similar issues but with accented Slovenian characters, but only when receiving messages from a user that uses MS Exchange server (such cases received from GMail senders work fine)....
