@jbenet It's worth considering that there are a lot of non-cryptographic hashes out there. Heaps when you include all the variants. [CRC alone has 52](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check#Standards_and_common_use). A single byte isn't enough...
