I can't reproduce this error. Which version do you use (c3d -version)? Do you provide parameter min|max? Without this I also get an exception.
Work around: c3d comes with itksnap. You can convert liver.dcm to nifti and read the nifti instead. c3d liver.dcm -o liver.nii.gz itksnap liver.nii.gz
Maybe you could try to convert your data with dcm2niix hoping that there are more verbose messages.
This happens with version `itksnap-4.0.0-alpha.2-20220118-Linux-gcc64` and `itksnap-4.2.2-20241202-Linux-x86_64`
