I ended up finding a helpful example that got this going using an alternative firmware, [here's](https://github.com/russhughes/st7789_mpy/commit/a5586d42d0c30e0692566d177ba1bfcea7434766#diff-a67d389ce17dc9920e80cec65de5ddfb) an example, for anyone looking in the future.
Bump on this would be nice if this was something that was configurable so we can register our own bots.
Would love to see this picked up and finished!

@wjessop Nope we ended up just removing makara in favor of [rails implementation](https://guides.rubyonrails.org/active_record_multiple_databases.html). It actually works fairly well as of 6.1 If you can I'd switch over to that.
