Extend support of application default credentials

On osx I haven't been able to make gargle work with application default credentials. Python and golang libraries work but for whatever reason I get back a null from gargle.

Upgrade GCS client to 2.2.7

Wondering what happened with this PR as we are seeing performance issues with GCS and at a minimum the changes that the new connector brings would greatly aid our troubleshooting.
