Yep, seems duplicate of that. Don't know if I should close this but I posted my locale as asked in the other issue.
I was testing Fedora in a VM for other reasons and I can confirm that this bug happens there too. So it seems to no be Ubuntu specific 
I was playing around with the codebase, and I found a hacky solution. In fact, seems that official Protonmail bridge does not work for k9 either, and inspecting [this repository](https://github.com/TChilderhose/protonmail-bridge-docker/blob/main/patches/k-9_search_fix.patch)...
I'll leave a note in my fork making clear that it is hacky and has no support, no worries
