Had the same issue when trying to compile under Kali (newlib 3.0). I turned to latest Debian Stretch, which still uses newlib 2.4, and it worked perfectly.

I was looking at that yesterday, but there are a couple of drawbacks. For example, the only release for the time being, after excluding the untagged, is the "v1.0" one....

We could just issue the Createbin.exe and avr-objcopy.exe from within the GUI to generate the bin files for BOOT_LOADER_EXE and leave the hex/eep files as they are.

I have the drag-drop upload functionality for bin files ready. I believe that the eml/json support for upload, as well as the autodetection of the file type should be added...
