Ok, found something. This app installs a gnome extension, I had the extension disabled, I enabled it and the app works again and doesn't freeze. 
I'm getting this as well, I unchecked 'Color and noise effects' but still get these errors. In my case just entering overview also gets these messages.
I am getting this with xwayland application like chromium, so not restricted to flatpak applications.
It works for me just by changing the default hostname, did not have to edit /etc/hosts as @zeten30 did, no sourcing vte.sh and no reboot required just restarting the app....
