I've noticed that for blocks like cactus where when the bottom block get's broken all the cactus blocks above break, the data will not get removed from the block and...

Piston head gives data to the block it's pulling (sticky pistons)

When applying data to the head of a sticky piston while it is extended, it will transfer this data to the block it pulls in.
