This would be a handy feature. Especially for writing unit tests, where often it's okay if the attributes aren't reserialized exactly.
So far I have got about this by doing an expensive extract, append and write cycle. I will look into this tonight - might help both of us. SD
Just wanted to add a couple of points here. The results are different based on passing a mask or not. Here is a toy example with a (5,5) shift introduced....

I ran the PERL script `mkjobtexmf --jobname 0_Trento_2016 --cmd-tex pdflatex` to make a list of dependent files. The output log file is attached. Hopefully, that will help investigate the issue....
