i doubt that changing the database will fix anything. better to find the weaknesses in the current implementation.

pkg: Error extracting the archive: 'Write error'

i found the culprit. i had tmpmfs="YES" in my /etc/rc.conf after commenting out that line (back to defaults, i guess...) the pkg update -f worked again.
