dlna/upnp mode has limited external subtitles support by design, not the design of nova player, but the upnp/dlna protocol. Use smb if you want to use external subs.
If you change installation to image mode, then ssh can start fine, in directory mode ssh always fails, no clue.

OK, so I get it the Android TV detection bug can be fixed? because it's knida annoying when using USB drive with Nova as it is now.
Try switching to Xbox mode, many 3rd party ones support this. Pressing direction right while start to switch.
