Seen this issue before, on Northdegree's version of Evolve. Horrible issue, and in my opinion needs to be urgently solved.
I could never reproduce it, however it happened randomly (Windows server). There was no 'common issue' with the names. As far as I remember, kicking them then banning their SteamID...
Confirmed on Linux too
I found out, on Linux and Mac OS, installing the font into the system itself allows GMod to load that font into the game. See http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1374457&p=44774515&viewfull=1#post44774515
Can confirm fonts are working in Linux now.
