While in the meantime, would an option be to add a "Refresh" or "Restart" option in the context menu between "Show" and "Exit"? Or maybe some _assignable_ keystroke/key-combo to restart...

Another way of highlighting icons could be to make them bigger / wider / thicker so that they seem highlighted regardless of color or contrast. Or instead add an option...
